While strange rumors about their ill King grip a kingdom, the crown prince becomes their only hope against a mysterious plague overtaking the land.
Set in the Joseon period. The king falls ill to smallpox and rumors start to spread that he has actually died. Meanwhile, Crown Prince Lee Chang is labeled a traitor by the Haewon Cho Clan, the clan of the current pregnant Queen and her father, Cheif State Councilor Cho Hak Joo. While trying to uncover the mystery of what happened to his father, the Crown Prince goes with his guard, Moo Young, to Dongnae to look for Physician Lee Seung Hui who treated his father, only to be stuck with Assistant Physician Seo Bi and the mysterious man, Young Shin, in a village plagued with a mysterious disease. The second season centers on the advancement of the plague across several provinces. In the lead-up to halting the outbreak, a devastating revelation ensues at Sangju. Upon the arrival of the winter season, the undead hordes now roam freely due to a change in ambient temperature. Fearing the ramifications of an imminent invasion, Prince Lee Chang attempts to garner support from his allies to stop the undead and reclaim his right to the throne. Unbeknownst to the Prince, another conspiracy for political gain is brewing within the corrupt Haewon Cho Clan. As Queen Consort Cho schemes to steal a male newborn to cement as heir to the royal throne, she further orchestrates a last ditch strategy to use the plague against the citizens of Hanyang, if her former plan fails to succeed. As calamity looms among the living, only one question remains. Can the Prince save his people in time and end the political turmoil at the capital or will the plague mark the end of the Joseon dynasty?
Synopsis Wang-gug
In medieval Korea, the King has named his bastard son Chang as prince and heir. But he later marries a young Queen from the Cho clan, and when the Queen becomes pregnant, prince Chang realizes his new half-brother will take precedence as the new King.
A plague of smallpox ravages the kingdom, and the King falls ill. A doctor from a distant clinic is called to the royal palace at Hanyang and, while treating the King, he attacks his apprentice.
Noone sees the King anymore, and the scholars of the kingdom fear the King may be dead, and his death being concealed by the Cho clan to ensure that the unborn Cho baby becomes King in his place. But prince Chang and the scholars decide to claim the throne, initiating a failed coup that forces the prince to escape the royal palace at Hanyang.
Meanwhile, the doctor that treated the King returns to his clinic in Jiyulheon, carrying his dead apprentice. One of the starving patients decides to cook the dead apprentice's body and give the food to the patients.
Trying to understand what happened to his father, prince Chang decides to look for the doctor that treated his father and, when he reaches his clinic, he finds all his patients are now dead. He discovers the doctor used the healing powers of a rare flower to resuscitate the dead King, thus proving the Cho clan claim to the throne is illegal. He is intercepted by the queen's brother and his guards and, during a brief struggle, the queen's brother is killed by the undead doctor, then beheaded by prince Chang.
Meanwhile, the governor of Jiyulheon decides to take the dead bodies from the clinic to his palace and start an investigation. When night comes, the dead come back to life and attack the villagers. The city is set ablaze and destroyed.
The next day, prince Chang takes charge of the local government and demands that all dead bodies be found and destroyed, and all villagers be evacuated. But the corrupt bureaucrats decide to take the only boat left and escape the city, leaving the villagers to their fate. Local traditions demand the bodies be buried, and the noble families decide to take their dead relatives on the boat. When night falls, the ship is ravaged by the undead and only the governor escapes.
Meanwhile, prince Chang leads the evacuation to the clinic at Jiyulheon but, in the next morning, the Cho guards arrive and kill most of the survivors as traitors. Chang resists the attack but has to escape into the forest.
He decides to seek for help in the realm of his old mentor, an old noblemen that lives in seclusion after the death of a loved one. This noblemen ears of the undead plague, and decides to unite his forces with prince Chang.
In the palace at Hanyang, the undead King is being held captive by the Cho clan and fed young maidens, while the young Queen waits for the baby to be born, But something is wrong with her pregnancy. Pregnant lonely women, without any family, are being rounded up and taken to the royal palace where the Cho clan feeds them generously. Will the new baby be a boy? Will he or she survive birth? If not, what will the Cho clan do with the pregnant women and their babies? And how will the undead plague be stopped now it spread beyond Jiyulheon?
Will prince Chang prove his father is dead and denounce the monstrosity the Cho clan created?
